A source-based review for Australian adults covering study selection, payment routes, timing, privacy and a practical way to track your real time and rewards.

Our take

User Interviews is worth considering if you enjoy explaining your experiences and can be selective about applications. Australians can join its participant panel, but being eligible to apply does not secure a session. Before spending time on a screener, check the research format, the actual reward and who will send it.

Review basis: Official sources checked on 3 October 2026. We have not opened a participant account, applied for studies or redeemed a reward for this review. This is an unscored, source-based assessment for Australian adults. Read how we review platforms.

Who User Interviews suits

The useful question is whether you are comfortable with the whole process: describing your background, waiting for selection, following study instructions and accepting the stated reward. User Interviews connects researchers with participants; the researcher reviews applications and supplies the participation requirements. How the platform works.

  • A reasonable fit: You have genuine experience relevant to a study, can protect the required time and are happy with its reward and privacy conditions.
  • Worth passing on: You need money by a fixed date, only want cash but the listing offers gift cards, or would have to stretch your answers to qualify.
  • Look more closely: A large incentive comes with several sessions, travel, recording, specialist work knowledge or extra screening. Evaluate all of those commitments together.

For a broader choice of research formats, start with our Australian paid research guide. If you are also considering Prolific, use our Prolific vs User Interviews comparison to check access, time, privacy and payment side by side. This review focuses on the decisions and payment details specific to User Interviews.

Can Australians join and what does sign-up require?

Australia appears on the current supported-country list. That page says people in supported countries can create an account and apply. It does not describe an Australian panel waitlist; this should not be confused with waiting to be selected for an individual study.

This review is intended for readers aged 18 and over. The participant terms also permit 16- and 17-year-olds with a parent or guardian’s consent. Each study can impose its own narrower eligibility criteria.

The sign-up guide requires a completed profile and mobile-phone verification to activate an account. Landline, Wi-Fi and VoIP numbers are not supported. Keep your real location and profile details current. The guide does not establish a universal government-ID upload requirement, and we have not tested the account checks ourselves.

Social connections are a separate choice: User Interviews encourages LinkedIn or Facebook links for verification. Encouraged does not mean mandatory. Review what a connection shares before authorising it.

Applying is separate from getting a place

An invitation to apply means a study may fit your profile. You still complete its screener and, if selected, receive instructions to schedule and confirm. The browsing guide explains that matching uses location and demographics. A study advertised online may still target a particular country or city.

Approval also needs a timely response. User Interviews says more approved candidates may be invited than there are places, so a study can fill before you book. Check the offered time against your Australian time zone before confirming.

Treat application screening as unpaid time when deciding whether to apply. The published process ties the study incentive to selection and completion, rather than submission of an application. User Interviews separately states that extra calls or email exchanges for Premium Screening are unpaid.

Our approach is to apply where the description genuinely matches your experience and set a personal limit on screening time. Do not invent job responsibilities or purchase history. The platform’s selection guidance calls for truthful answers and advises against using AI to answer screeners. We have no Australian acceptance-rate data from which to estimate your chances or monthly earnings.

Choose a format you can actually complete

User Interviews supports moderated interviews and focus groups, unmoderated tasks, and studies spread across multiple days. Sessions can be online, by phone or in person, depending on the project. These are platform capabilities, not a claim that every format is available to every Australian member. Official study-format descriptions.

  • Live interview or group: Check the appointment length, time zone, microphone/camera requirements and whether other people will attend. Include preparation and any travel in your decision.
  • Unmoderated task: Check the deadline, supported device, upload requirements and whether your screen or voice will be recorded. Completing it on your own does not automatically mean it is private or unrecorded.
  • Multi-day study: Read the full sequence. Ask whether payment depends on completing every entry, follow-up and session before accepting a commitment you cannot finish.

UserTesting studies are a separate case. Current help says User Interviews participants may receive studies from UserTesting customers without creating a separate UserTesting account. Some require an extension or mobile app. The FAQ says processing is within 14 days; the payment guide specifies 14 days after completion. Check this separate timetable for those studies. Availability to your particular account has not been tested. UserTesting-study FAQ.

Who pays determines your reward options

Read the incentive description before applying. The official payment guide distinguishes two arrangements:

  • User Interviews distributes: Listings describe a “choice of dozens of digital gift cards”, delivered through Tremendous. User Interviews excludes cash options such as PayPal, Venmo and bank transfer from this route. Digital prepaid, gift-card and donation options depend on location.
  • The researcher distributes: The listing specifies the reward. Researchers can offer other methods, including PayPal or cash, but neither is universal. A particular retailer’s card is also different from choosing among a catalogue.

A US reward example does not establish Australian availability. If you need bank-transferable money, check the specific study before applying.

Redemption happens per study. User Interviews’ redemption guide says its incentives cannot currently be combined. Check the currency and reward carefully: mistaken redemptions cannot be reissued. A virtual Visa can require a name and address to activate. The reward’s own conditions still matter, including where it can be used and any expiry or charges.

We did not verify a universal participant withdrawal-fee schedule or every Australian reward’s terms, so we do not label all rewards fee-free. Track the amount and usable value you actually receive. Our Australian gift-card rewards guide helps you decide whether a non-cash reward suits your normal spending.

When should payment arrive?

The standard support window is 10 business days, but its starting date depends on the study. Early submission of a task does not bring the starting date forward. Check your invitation or confirmation for the date that applies. Official payment-date guide.

  • Live session: Count from the day you participated.
  • Unmoderated task with an expiring link: Count from the task-window expiry.
  • Unmoderated task with a fixed deadline: Count from that deadline, even if you finished earlier.

The missing-incentive guide counts Monday to Friday, excluding US federal holidays. Some researchers state a longer timetable in the study details. Let the full applicable window pass before escalating; the separate UserTesting timetable described above also needs to be checked.

If the reward has not arrived

  1. Check My Studies. “Confirmed” means attendance has not been marked; “Paid” means a platform-distributed incentive is ready to redeem; “Interview completed” means attendance is marked for a researcher-distributed reward, not necessarily that you have received it.
  2. Check email and spam. For platform distribution, look for compensation@userinterviews.com. A researcher may use a different sender.
  3. Contact the appropriate party. For a researcher-issued reward, message the researcher through the study. If that does not resolve it, or the platform distributes the reward, use participant support.

These status checks follow the official troubleshooting steps. Keep the study title or ID, relevant dates and completion evidence. The payment guide says support cannot follow up on incentives for studies completed more than three months earlier, so do not leave an overdue reward unreported. A support process is not a payment guarantee.

Privacy checks before you apply

Both email and phone details are required for participation. Without Premium Screening, researchers see those details after session confirmation. With Premium Screening, they receive them when you apply. A notice on the study details page identifies that additional contact possibility. This is an important difference if you prefer not to receive screening calls. Researcher-contact policy.

The privacy policy separates platform data from information a researcher collects directly during a session. Reading the platform policy alone therefore does not answer every question about a study’s recordings or data use.

Before confirming, ask what will be recorded, who can access it, how long it will be kept and what happens if you withdraw. Check any third-party meeting or testing software too. Close unrelated tabs, private messages and work documents before screen sharing. Never reveal passwords or confidential employer material to make an answer more convincing.

Some studies require an NDA or release form. User Interviews warns that its document-signing process creates a legally binding signature. Read the actual document and ask about unclear terms before agreeing. NDA and release-form guidance.

Cancellations, withdrawals and incomplete studies

The September 2026 cancellation guide asks for at least 24 hours’ notice. An older account-standing article still recommends 48 hours. Give as much notice as possible and check your study’s instructions; the published guidance is inconsistent on that point. Rescheduling can release your existing place, and another slot is not guaranteed.

Late arrival, a no-show or incomplete participation can affect your incentive and future eligibility. The participant policies allow reduced or withheld payment if a session is not completed in full. If you need to stop for privacy, comfort or technical reasons, tell the researcher promptly and ask how this affects the reward. We have not verified a universal paid-withdrawal entitlement.

If a researcher cancels you, do not budget for the full incentive. Current participant help says a 25% cancellation incentive may be offered at the researcher’s discretion, with exclusions such as failing eligibility or being unresponsive. If offered, it is sent after the study closes; the guide says this can take 1–3 weeks after your session. This is conditional, not a guaranteed cancellation payment.

Is it worth your time? Run a small personal trial

Our recommendation is to judge User Interviews on your own completed outcomes. Pick an application-time budget you can comfortably spend without a reward. Reassess when that budget is used, rather than repeatedly applying because one listing looks attractive.

In a simple log, record:

  • Minutes spent on applications, extra screening and messages
  • Preparation, attendance, travel and follow-up time
  • The advertised amount, currency, payment method and sender
  • The relevant deadline, actual receipt date and usable reward value
  • Any out-of-pocket costs, problems or privacy conditions that changed your decision

Keep advertised rewards separate from rewards received. If you calculate a personal hourly result, use all the time and costs in your log. Treat a gift card you will not normally spend as less useful than its face value; pending rewards should stay pending. One completed interview cannot establish a reliable future earning rate.

Use our first-redemption workbook to keep that first reward journey organised. You can also read the Prolific review when choosing another research platform, comparing its own requirements and reward process rather than assuming the two work alike.

Bottom line

User Interviews makes the most sense as a selective research option for an Australian adult who can commit to suitable studies and accept their stated rewards. The best starting habit is simple: read the whole listing before the screener, confirm who pays, and keep a record until the reward is received and usable.

Browse studies on the official User Interviews site. This is a direct, non-affiliate link.

Limitations: Public policies describe the intended process. We have not verified individual researchers, logged-in Australian study availability, selection odds, support response times, a personal payout, or the full Australian reward catalogue. Terms and study instructions can change. This review does not assign a star score, claim tested earnings or promise payment.
