A prepaid Visa reward can help pay for purchases, but check its currency, fees, permitted uses and deadlines before choosing it. Freecash’s published Visa terms deduct 5% from the withdrawal and issue the card in USD. A US$100 withdrawal therefore produces a US$95 card balance. Its Australian-dollar spending value depends on conversion when you use it.
This guide uses Freecash and Tremendous as a documented example. Other prepaid Visa and Mastercard rewards can have different conditions. For retailer-specific codes, see our separate Australian gift-card rewards guide.
Identify the exact card before redeeming
Record the platform, reward-delivery service, card product, issuing bank and balance currency. Find the issuer and applicable terms on the card or redemption page rather than assuming the platform itself issues the card.
Our Freecash review records a Visa Prepaid (USD) option in the publisher’s Australian account on 27 September 2026. That dated observation does not establish availability or terms for another account.
Freecash’s withdrawal instructions say delivery comes through Tremendous and require acknowledgement that the transaction is non-refundable. Check your live reward screen before confirming, particularly if you need cash or have one specific purchase in mind.
Freecash confirms delivery through Tremendous, but this does not identify the exact card programme offered to your account. The Tremendous sections below describe its published Virtual Visa guidance; check that it matches your card’s own terms.
Follow the value through four stages
- Platform withdrawal amount. Check the currency and the amount leaving your available platform balance. Do not interpret an unqualified dollar sign as AUD.
- Platform deduction. Freecash publishes a 5% Visa withdrawal fee, deducted from the selected amount. In its US$100 example, US$5 is the fee and US$95 reaches the prepaid card. Read the current confirmation screen for your withdrawal.
- Card balance and card fees. Tremendous says its Virtual Visa balance is held in USD. Check the card’s own fee schedule separately, including any inactivity charge. A platform fee and a cardholder fee belong to different stages.
- Purchase in Australian dollars. Tremendous says the USD balance can fund local-currency purchases without a Tremendous currency-conversion fee. Exchange-rate movement can still change its AUD spending value. Check the checkout currency and full amount, including any merchant charge, before paying.
The Tremendous currency guide explains the conversion and fluctuating local value. A zero conversion fee leaves the platform deduction and any other applicable charges to consider. Keep US$95 labelled in USD; do not record it as A$95 or assume a fixed AUD value until spending.
Check whether your intended payment is allowed
Tremendous’s permitted-use guidance excludes recurring subscriptions, instalments and bill payments for this Virtual Visa product. It also lists restricted merchant categories and warns that some businesses reject prepaid cards. A Visa logo alone does not establish acceptance.
Its cash-withdrawal guidance rules out ATM withdrawals, purchase cashback and transfers to a bank account or services such as PayPal. Choose a permitted purchase rather than trying to turn the balance into cash.
For online purchases, follow the card’s credit-payment instructions. For in-person use, Tremendous describes adding the virtual card to a supported digital wallet first. Its spending tips explain the process; a printed card image is not a reliable checkout method.
What to check when a payment is declined
Start with the actual decline record. Tremendous’s decline guide says the card page, reached through the reward email, shows the available balance and transaction history with the decline reason.
Then work through these checks:
- Amount: Compare the full purchase with the remaining balance in the purchase currency. A previous AUD estimate may have changed with exchange rates.
- Details and payment type: Recheck the card number, expiry and security code privately. Follow the instructions to use credit rather than debit.
- Merchant or transaction restriction: Check whether the purchase is recurring, a bill payment, cash-like or otherwise excluded. Pay-at-pump fuel purchases are restricted under the published terms.
- Acceptance and remaining balance: Ask whether the merchant accepts this prepaid card. For a small balance, ask whether it supports a split payment before attempting one; do not assume an online checkout does.
If the reason is unclear, use the support route on the card page. Keep the merchant, date, amount and decline message available. Do not post a full card number or security code in a public complaint.
Record both deadlines and check inactivity fees
There can be two separate deadlines: claiming the reward and spending the resulting card balance. Tremendous’s expiry guidance says any claim deadline appears with the redemption instructions. After redemption, the selected payout’s terms determine whether and when it expires. Its prepaid-card dates use month/year format and expire at the end of that month.
Do not copy a generic validity period onto your card. Tremendous’s Virtual Visa programme documentation describes a default expiry six months after redemption without inactivity fees, and a 60-month expiry after redemption with a US$3.95 monthly inactivity fee after 12 consecutive months of non-use. Programme circumstances determine the structure.
Those programme options do not identify the version attached to a particular Freecash withdrawal. Check the terms shown before redemption and the issued card page. Set reminders for each applicable deadline and plan a usable purchase while the balance remains available.
Six checks before you confirm
- Is this exact reward available in your Australian account now?
- What currency leaves the platform, and what currency funds the card?
- What platform, cardholder and checkout charges apply?
- Can you use it for your intended merchant and payment type?
- What are the claim deadline, card expiry and any inactivity trigger?
- Have you saved the confirmation and official support route securely?
For incentives from interviews or studies, our paid research guide covers the earlier steps between participation, reward issuance and redemption. Apply these card checks once you know the exact prepaid product offered.

Official Freecash and Tremendous guidance linked above was checked on 7 October 2026 (UTC). This guide is based on published instructions; we did not open an account, redeem a new card or test an Australian merchant for it. The earlier Freecash account observation is attributed separately. Confirm your own reward’s current terms before committing.
